A Guide to Arts Commons in Calgary That’ll Strengthen Your Love for the Stage
If vegetables are required for a well-rounded diet, then I believe that art is needed for a well-rounded life. This is why I make it a point to go out and watch stage performances from time to time.
There’s just something so inspiring and moving about watching an artist perform passionately. Lucky for me, the Arts Commons consistently provides shows that satisfy my artistic cravings.
Through this arts center, I’ve had the privilege of seeing amazing local and international acts without having to leave Calgary. I really appreciate that the people behind the center strive to make art more accessible to the public.
I was so inspired by the last show I saw there that I decided to do my part. This guide tells you everything you need to know when it comes to watching shows at Calgary’s Arts Commons.

What to See in Arts Commons
Jack Singer Concert Hall

The Jack Singer Concert Hall is the most jaw-dropping venue in Arts Commons because of its sheer size. It can accommodate around 1,800 people, but believe me when I say that there are no bad seats in this place.
Throughout the years, it has gone through numerous upgrades so that it could have exceptional acoustics. Because of this, it’s now the home of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
Max Bell Theatre

The Max Bell Theatre is essentially a chameleon. Its stage and seating can be adjusted to whatever the current show needs it to be. This is why it’s the perfect venue for Theatre Calgary.
With over 750 seats, this theatre company utilizes the versatility of Max Bell Theatre to deliver highly impactful productions. At this point, part of the excitement of watching one of their shows is seeing how they’ve arranged and decorated the theatre.
Big Secret Theatre

Entering the Big Secret Theatre might be a shock to some because it doesn’t always have a stage. It’s exactly for this reason that the collective One Yellow Rabbit loves this venue.
Each year, they create an original theatrical work that they perform here. Based on my experience, the lack of a formal stage allows audience members to really connect with the performance and be immersed in the story.
But they’re not the only ones who make use of the space. Since it can fit up to 190 seats, the theatre can also be rented out for lectures, small performances, and even wedding receptions.
Motel Theatre

The Motel Theatre may be the smallest venue in Arts Common, with only 50 seats inside. But its role in the local arts community is huge.
Most of the shows here are held by a collective called Downstage but other local artists perform here as well.
Many of them use it for plays, performance art, experimental theatre, and other creative endeavors. I can always depend on it as a place where I can hear refreshing takes and worthwhile social commentary.
It’s an important collaborative space where artists can support other artists and help one another hone their craft.

Native Tongues Taqueria will have you wishing that Taco Tuesdays were every day instead. Just like how vibrant Mexico City is, so is their food. Each taco is full of fresh and colorful ingredients — it’s always hard not to snap a pic.
Every diner you ask is going to have a different answer when it comes to what their favorite taco is. Personally, I believe first-timers should try the Carne Asada and the Pollo Asado, which are classic.
However, taco connoisseurs will definitely enjoy the more exciting Frijoles, Hongos, and Pork Belly Pibil tacos. Even the salsas that these tacos come with are great on their own.
For a really good time, take advantage of their happy hour. They’ve got great mixed drinks that pair very well with the food.

If I had to describe Teatro Ristorante in one word, I would label them as extra. This restaurant takes fine dining to the next level with the amount of effort they put in.
Each dish that comes out of this kitchen is a masterpiece. We could not believe our eyes when we saw the steak and the scallops. It looked like modern art on a plate and tasted just like heaven.
We also couldn’t resist trying cocktails from their creative Seven Deadly Sins Menu. With names like Pride, Envy, and Lust, we simply had to indulge.
However, it’s also highly recommended to talk to their sommelier and try a wine pairing. They’ve got an award-winning cellar that has over 10,000 bottles, but somehow they always manage to suggest the perfect one.
