We explored the Bow River Pathway in Calgary and discovered local secrets. Find out more in this guide.
Whenever I ask around about where I can go on the weekends, plenty of my colleagues always recommend the Bow River Pathway. I’ve seen and walked some of the trails, but I can’t say that I’m really familiar with the whole stretch.
So, I recently decided to grab a friend and really explore its winding ways. I wanted to discover all the different ways locals use it to pass the time.
To my surprise, there’s so much to do here compared to what I initially thought. From exercising to sightseeing, it’s a treasure trove of exciting activities.
In this guide, I wrote down all the things I saw that would keep you entertained when you visit Calgary’s Bow River Pathway.
Where is the Bow River Pathway?

Bow River Pathway is a network of trails found on the banks of Bow River. It stretches 48 kilometers from Bearspaw Dam to Fish Creek Provincial Park. The Peace Bridge connects the northern and southern pathways of Bow River.
How to Get to Bow River Pathway
Via Light Rail: You can access the Bow River Pathway from several light rail stations. Some of the closest ones include Nb Sunnyside Ctrain Station and Wb 7 Street SW Station, which are only a short walking distance away from Peace Bridge.
Via Bus: Transport lines 2, 22, 65, 304, and 414 have stops along the Bow River Pathway.
Via Private Car: Type a location along Bow River Pathway into a navigation app (like Waze) or your car’s GPS to get directions. There are several parking lots in the area that are free, such as the ones in Edworthy Park and Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.

Hiking and Cycling

It would take the average runner around 10 hours to go from one end of the Bow River Pathway to the other.
However, I find that the best way to explore the many paths is by treating it like a choose-your-own-adventure journey. You start off on one trail and see where it takes you.
For example, you might find yourself in a loop in front of Bowness Park. It’s a fairly easy trail with lots of shade, making it a great choice for families that want to go on a relaxing stroll together.
I personally enjoyed passing through the architectural marvel that is the Peace Bridge. Its striking red color makes it stand out from the lush greenery around it.
It’s a very photogenic bridge so of course, I had to stop and snap a few pics. Luckily, there are separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists so I didn’t have to worry about getting run over by a bike.
Floating the Bow

Floating the Bow is one of Calgarians’ favorite things to do during the summers. It’s when you ride a watercraft, like a kayak or a raft, down the Bow River to cool off.
It’s a very relaxing activity that can take up to 3 hours, considering how long the Bow River is. The locals love it because they get to lounge and tan as they admire the view of the city’s downtown skyline.
You don’t have to worry about buying any equipment since there are plenty of gear rental places along the river.
Just remember to wear a life jacket at all times. The Bow River is popular for recreational activities, but it can still be quite dangerous if you’re not paying attention.
Visiting the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

If you explore the length of Bow River, you’re bound to stumble upon the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. This reserve is meant to accommodate migratory birds and provide them with a place to rest.
Birdwatchers would be happy to know that over 270 species of birds have been spotted here. Personally, I’ve seen ducks, geese, and woodpeckers, but I’ve been told that owls and eagles also frequent the area.
Make to sure bring your binoculars to see the different birds here up close. And since this is a protected environment, take note that bicycles and dogs are not welcome here for the sake of not disturbing the wildlife.

Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant is a significant landmark that’s directly tied to Calgary’s history. Many even speculate that the concept of the Calgary Stampede was born here.
Today, the property is still as beautiful as it was 120 years ago. In fact, dining on the veranda will make you believe that you’ve been transported out of the city and somewhere more magical.
Even us locals felt like we were tasting something new with their Canadian cuisine menu. It’s seasonal so you can always expect that they’ll be serving the best ingredients available.
Out of all their dishes, it’s the seafood that stands out the most. The oysters are always fresh, the octopus is delightful, and the surf and turf is the best you’ll have in the area.

The Keg Steakhouse is one of the first places Calgarians head to when they want to commemorate a special event. For this reason, make sure to book ahead, or else it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be seated.
You can expect top-notch service every time you dine here. They take everyone’s dietary preferences and requests seriously. And so, every diner has a personalized experience.
This place is a carnivore’s paradise. When we think of steaks, we always think of The Keg because of how flavorful and perfectly cooked their cuts come out each time.
We highly recommend ordering their classic martini as well. Not only is it top-shelf, but it also makes us feel as suave as James Bond every time we have it.
